Southern Wind Shipyard Visit for Upcoming RP90 Performance Superyacht

April 12, 2016

Cape Town, South Africa (April 2016) – Last month R/P Naval Architect and Project Manager Tony Beale and Lead Engineer Will Cyr traveled to Cape Town to the Southern Wind Shipyard to visually inspect the build progress of the RP90. This design is the first fully custom build for the Southern Wind Shipyard and is for a recurring client of both SWS and RPYD. For this project RPYD is responsible for the Naval Architecture, Deck and General Arrangement and Structural Engineering.

The R/P team was on site for two days to complete the detailed visual inspection and documentation of the as built internal structure, hull and deck laminates. As expected, the team found the build to meet the high level of craftsmanship that the Southern Wind Shipyard is known for. The inspection did find some variations from the as specified laminate drawings. These findings were discussed with the SW team and a detailed report was issued to the yard and project manager following the trip to achieve the desired specification.

This trip is the second visit to the yard for this project. Before construction began parties from RPYD and SW met to discuss build techniques and structural details to be specified in the build. Regular site visits and face to face meetings with builders is a critical to ensure the best execution of the design specifications.

The team looks forward to the next trip for the launch and sea trials of this exceptional new build expected in November 2016.

We would like to thank everyone at Southern Wind Shipyard for the excellent hospitality and assistance during our visit that helped make this trip a great success and beneficial to the project.

Despite the long days in the yard we did find some time to see the sites of Cape Town, and are stoked to have squeezed in a kite surfing session overlooking Table Mountain from reknowned Dolphin Beach.
