Aboard the Orma60 Mighty Merloe

April 25, 2016

In preparation for the 2016 Newport to Ensenada Race, Reichel/Pugh engineers AJ Sawyer and Dan Flanigan joined the team of Mighty Merloe for its sailing delivery up the SoCal coastline, taking the opportunity to learn from its highly-accomplished crewmembers about the big trimaran’s performance and sailing systems along the way.

The ORMA 60 employs 3 daggerboards: a straight board with a trim tab in the center hull, and asymmetric curved “C” boards in the floats. The effect is the decoupling of lift force and side force, enabling the crew to finely tune the balance of vertical lift (to keep the bows up) and horizontal lift (to reduce leeway) based on boat speed and wind angle. The massive canting rig with rotating wing mast gives the crew full authority over sail shape and weight distribution through a remarkably simple set of controls.

A warm thank you to Howard Enloe for his pioneering spirit and proactive support of research, development and innovation.

This first-hand experience adds to a continued R&D effort to extend R/P design and engineering into performance multihulls. Stay tuned for our newest concept, soon to come!
