GALATEIA and MAGIC CARPET³ 1st and 2nd for the 2017 Wally Season’s Championship

The Reichel/Pugh-designed 100’ Wallycento’s GALATEIA and MAGIC CARPET³ take 1st and 2nd place in the 2017 Wally Season’s Championship!

There was no better venue than Les Voiles de Saint Tropez, amongst the world’s most beautiful classic and modern yachts and 4,000 international sailors, for the Reichel/Pugh-designed WallyCento GALATEIA to conclude its racing season by winning the overall 2017 Wally Championship. In addition to Les Voiles, the complete season included Palmavela in Palma de Mallorca, and the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta (Galateia took 2nd in class / 10-boat fleet) and Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (1st in class / 11-boat fleet), both in Porto Cervo.

In an interview for Wally about their win at the 2017 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup earlier in the season, the owner of Galateia explained they have been on an enormously steep learning curve to succeed, “We are only in our second year and we had a pretty uneven season last year. We made a few changes to the boat and the crew has spent an inordinate amount of time together preparing. For the hard work, the credit goes to them. It’s like the 10,000 hours’ concept. It takes time and a lot of practice, and we are still getting better. I have learned one or two huge lessons… never give up and be patient.” When asked what it meant to win, “It means so much.”

Aboard Galateia for the season was Reichel/Pugh Senior Naval Architect Tony Beale who explained that, “Over the winter the R/P design office worked closely with North Sails to optimize the boat for the season. The boat was meticulously prepared and the team put in many days practicing and improving. We came close at the Loro Piana regatta finishing second to Magic Carpet 3. Winning the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was a great reward for everyone’s hard work. This win is a tremendous result for the owner and team on Galateia.”

The Reichel/Pugh designed WallyCento MAGIC CARPET³, with Jim Pugh aboard, raced to 1st place in the Wally Class’s 2017 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and placed 2nd in the Wally Season’s championship tied with the 80’ Lyra. Magic Carpet³ owned by Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones was launched in 2012 and won the 2014 Wally Championship winning three of the five regattas of that season. After taking line honors in 2014, Magic Carpet took line and overall honors in offshore Mediterranean Classic the Giraglia Race.

Galateia was designed and engineered by Reichel/Pugh, built by Green Marine and launched in 2015.
