Inventing Legends | Wallycento Galateia

October 22, 2015 · Posted by kate

Reichel/Pugh launches the second generation of their ultra-fast 100ft performance cruisers into the Wallycento class with GALATEIA. The Wallycento box-rule was developed during Reichel/Pugh’s collaboration with owner Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones when he initiated the wallycento project for Magic Carpet 3. Key points are lightweight planing hulls, a powerful sailplan and high stability combined with a lifting keel and strict cruising interior requirements defined by the Wally Class rules.

R/P’s first Wallycento design, Magic Carpet 3, won the 2014 Wally Championship and overall the 2015 220 n.m. Mediterranean Classic, the Giraglia Race. Wally president Luca Bassani credits the success of the WALLY class to the established owner-driver rule and true dual role of grand prix racing performance packaged in a luxury cruising yacht.

“We developed the next generation Wallycento hull shape incorporating into the design the on-the-water experiences from Magic Carpet 3 and the results of our latest hull study in computational fluid dynamics,” says Jim Pugh. “All areas of the design were open for development with focus on hull development and on improving the underwater foil package, reducing windage and improving the yacht’s systems and function. In tandem the R/P engineering team advanced the State of the Art in composite structural design improving stiffness and strength, while lowering the VCG and improving the ballast ratio.”

A critical emphasis was placed on providing a responsive and rewarding experience for the helmsperson. Hull and appendage hydrodynamics, perfected rig positioning and a structure optimized for strength and stiffness provide a reassuring feeling of stability and control especially in more arduous wind and sea conditions.

The owner commissioned Green Marine to build Galateia and Bob Wylie, the project manager for the MC3 build was hired as project manager. Internally at Reichel/Pugh, Tony Beale headed up design project management communicating daily with the project team and the builder Green Marine. The project team worked with Southern Spars and North Sails to improve the rig and aero package. Gigio Russo of North Sails Italy, who is intimately involved in the sail program for Magic Carpet 3 brought his experience to the Galateia project in combination with North Sails designer Steve Calder.

A primary goal of R/P is to develop designs that have longevity and continue winning many season’s after launching. This 100’ superyacht combines the speed of the latest maxi racers while functioning as a luxury cruising yacht with its full interior, ultra-flush teak decks, a social guest cockpit seating ten, a self-tacking jib track, minimized push button deck hardware and a wide aft sun lounge.

Down below, beautifully designed interiors by Wally host the Owner’s suite forward, two guest double cabins, the main salon and lounge area with nav station, the galley, engine room and a double crew room. All cabins have en-suites. The bow locker features a submarine anchor system and a large sail locker with accommodation for two crewmembers, while the aft area features a large lazarette.

Galateia has completed sea-trials in the Solent and will head to the Caribbean this winter to cruise with the Owner’s family and participate in the St Barths Bucket Superyacht Regatta. In the Summer of 2016 Galateia will join the Wally class in the Mediterranean. The Reichel/Pugh team will stay intimately involved in the performance development of the Galateia.

2015 Bucket Regatta: A Fine Ending To A Grand Event

March 22, 2015 · Posted by kate

StBarthsBucket_NoDateSt Barths, French West Indies (March 22, 2015) – Perseverance was the key to victory in four classes (Gazelles, Elegantes, Mademoiselles, Grande Dames) sailing their last and final race at the 2015 St Barths Bucket Regatta. Sailing the “wrong way around” course meant the 35 competing superyachts launched their massive spinnakers at the start and took a clockwise tour of the island, testing sailing skills with a particularly lengthy beat up the backside. And though the superyachts, for safety’s sake, sail by rules that keep them at least 40 metres apart at all times, the competition was as close as anyone could wish for. Read More …
